Rwanda and Uganda commit to further enhancing bilateral cooperation

Monday, 6 May 2024 - Rwanda hosted the second cross-border security meeting between Rwanda and Uganda. The meeting convened to further strengthen cooperation between both countries and ease cross-border movements and trade.

The main purpose of the meeting was to further strengthen cooperation and ease movement of persons and goods between the two countries.

The meeting brought together senior officials from both sides in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province. It was co-chaired by Mrs. Clementine Mukeka, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of Rwanda, and Ambassador Dr. Julius J. Kivuna, Head of Regional Peace and Security in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uganda.

  In her remarks, PS Mukeka emphasized the contribution of this meeting in further strengthening bilateral relations.

  “I would like to acknowledge the significance of today’s meeting and command our common will to strengthen bilateral relations. The attendance by high level officials representing various institutions in both Uganda and Rwanda serves as a powerful testament to our shared commitment to peaceful, fruitful and prosperous Rwanda - Uganda relations,” she highlighted.

According to Ambassador Dr. Kivuna, joint efforts are required to create a safer environment for the people of both countries.

“Our delegation is quite large this time. We are all here for a common goal to ensure that the relationship between Rwanda and Uganda remains strong and mutually beneficial. I pledge our unwavering commitment to enhancing cross border cooperation with Rwanda. Together, I believe we can create a safer and more prosperous future for our citizens on both sides of the border. Let’s continue to work together towards a more prosperous and peaceful region for all our citizens.”   

This  meeting also assessed the current status of shared challenges faced in the sectors of immigration, trade, customs, health, border demarcation and security.
