Statement on cooperation agreements with Denmark

The Government of Rwanda received the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation and the Minister for Immigration and Integration in Rwanda from 26 to 28 April 2021.

As part of the visit, two Memoranda on Cooperation on Asylum and Migration issues and on Political Consultations were signed. These are the basis for strengthening bilateral cooperation between Rwanda and Denmark, and will focus on key areas, including trade and investment, and climate.

The MoU on Cooperation regarding Asylum and Migration Issues aims to strengthen bilateral dialogue on new and sustainable solutions to current migration and refugee challenges. Denmark already provides support to the Emergency Transit Mechanism in Gashora. Receiving asylum seekers from Denmark in Rwanda and processing asylum applications to Denmark is not part of this MoU.

Rwanda and Denmark are parties to the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol framework and are committed to the protection of refugees and asylum seekers and we look forward to continuing constructive dialogue between our two countries.
