RWANDA HOSTS THE 7TH PAN-AFRICAN FORUM ON MIGRATION

  News

Kigali, 18-21 October 2022 - Rwanda hosted the 7th edition of the Pan-African Forum on Migration (PAFOM7) under the theme:” Addressing the Impact of Climate Change on Migration and human mobility in Africa: Building Adaptation Strategies and Resilient Communities.”

Clementine Mukeka, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, officially opened the four-day event. In her remarks, she said that Rwanda is honored to host the 7th Pan African Forum on Migration.

“The fact that it is happening in Rwanda is a true testimony of our engagements and commitment to address these issues that are not confined by borders.”, PS Mukeka emphasized.

She further called upon African Union Member States to strengthen their collaborations as a continent and develop strategies, as climate change continues to induce migration and human mobility on the continent.

Climate change is emerging as one the main drivers of migration and forced displacement in Africa. Increasing temperatures and sea levels, changing precipitation patterns and more extreme weather are threatening human health and safety, food and water security and socio-economic development.

PAFOM 7 has been an opportunity for all the participants to deeply understand the impact of climate change on Migration and human mobility in Africa and propose pertinent recommendations to mitigate them.

The event was attended by over 200 participants including Ministers, senior officials, researchers and experts from 40 African Union Member States and International organizations.
